Johnny Carson Mural Going up at 3rd and Norfolk Ave.

NORFOLK - Norfolk’s most famous son will be in the spotlight for the next four days, during the Great American Comedy Festival presented by Nucor.  But a project underway on the southwest corner of 3rd Street and Norfolk Avenue will remind residents and visitors of Johnny Carson the whole year round.  Norfolk artist Karl Reeder is painting a mural featuring several scenes of Carson from his younger days to his 30-year-stint as host of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”  A committee of community leaders came up with the idea and raised the approximately $15,000 needed to have the painting commissioned.  Reeder says it’s a way of honoring Carson, who was very generous to his hometown.  The mural is going up on the east wall the former Andrew Bicycle building, which is now home to La Macarena Mexican Store.  Reeder says the $15,000 project is about a-third to a-fourth complete.
