Illegal Immigration Ordinance Technically in Effect in Fremont
FREMONT - A controversial ordinance adopted by the voters of Fremont has technically gone into effect even as the city council moves to overturn it. Fremont City Attorney Paul Payne says a resolution delaying enforcement of a provision barring landlords from renting to illegal immigrants has run out. Payne says the city has prepared paperwork for landlords even though the future of the ordinance remains in doubt. The city council had delayed enforcement of the ordinance adopted by public vote. That delay technically ran out late last week. Enforcement of the law will begin next week. Fremont landlords found renting to anyone without a permit could face fines of $100 per unlicensed adult tenant per day.
