Harvest Dangerous Time for Fires
NORFOLK- The fire danger is especially high in Northeast Nebraska this week, with high temperatures, strong winds and low relative humidity. Burt County Extension Educator John Wilson urges producers to be especially cautious of fire in the field this harvest season, since field fires can cause millions of dollars in damage to equipment and the crop in the field, not to mention the time lost. Wilson says it is important to keep equipment clean, especially around the engine and engine compartment. Wilson urges all producers to carry a cell phone to call the fire department, and to have two fire extinguishers available - one in the cab and one at ground level. He says it is also a good idea to have a tractor and disc parked at the edge of the field to create a firebreak if necessary.
