Gov. Heineman, Sen. Nordquist Spar Over Medicaid Expansion
LINCOLN - Gov. Dave Heineman is rejecting a state senator’s suggestion that he sign up for health care through the federal health care exchange. Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha challenged the governor to forego his state funded health insurance and sign up through the federal health insurance law. Heineman declined. "This is just Senator Nordquist engaged in a political stunt, a campaign gimmick," said Heineman. "You notice he issued that particular news release from his campaign account," added the governor. Nordquist says supporters are considering alternatives being used in other states to use federal dollars to buy private insurance. "One of the key pieces that we're going to include is some really robust reform to make sure we're investing in preventative services," said Nordquist. Nordquist acknowledges supporters remain short of the votes needed to expand Medicaid.
