Fotenberry: Detasseling "An Extraordinary Summer Ritual"

WASHINGTON, D.C.  -  While junior high and high school-age kids in other parts of the country spend their summers on the beach, some Nebraska kids spend their vacation time in the cornfields.  Nebraska 1st District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry knows all about detasseling; two of his daughters are working in the cornfields this summer.  Fortenberry told News Talk WJAG, that many-a-Nebraskan’s strong work ethic can be traced back to what he calls “an extraordinary summer ritual.”  They start in the early morning when it’s cold and wet and work well into the daytime hours under the hot sun fighting insects and corn rash.  Fortenberry represents Nebraska’s 1st District which includes much of eastern Nebraska, including the cities of Lincoln, Bellevue, Fremont, Columbus and Norfolk.
