Fortenberry Says Social Security Is OK -- For Now
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Many people have questions about just what federal services will continue during a government shutdown – and which will not. First District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry says the best source of information on that subject is USA.gov, where each federal agency has posted a summary of plans to deal with the government shutdown. Fortenberry says at this time, Social Security is NOT impacted, but that could change if no agreement is reached to raise the debt ceiling later this month. Fortenberry has sent about two-thirds of his staff home on furlough, but his office remains open with a skeleton staff. He says negotiations are at a standstill, with the House acting independently of the Senate, and President Obama refusing to negotiate.
