Fires In North Central Nebraska
NORFOLK - The North Central Nebraska brush fire continued to burn Sunday after jumping the Niobrara River and claiming two more homes. Officials evacuated all residents of the Niobrara Valley from the Norden Bridge east to Highway 183. It was estimated late Sunday morning that the fire was 20 percent contained, and the situation was similar to what it was Saturday. Two helicopters were being used to combat the blaze Sunday, while a third was grounded because of poor visibility from smoke. A large air tanker from Rapid City, S.D., and a Nebraska National Guard Black Hawk helicopter assisted Saturday.
