Fire Danger Concerns Continue

NORFOLK - Norfolk City Fire Marshal Terry Zwiebel is urging farmers to be fire-cautious, even though the area received a brief rain shower Thursday. Zwiebel says no burning permits will be issued until the area receives "significant moisture."

COLUMBUS - Farmers are reminded to clean all trash that accumulates on their combines frequently to prevent field fires during harvest. Platte County Extension Educator Allan Vyhnalek recommends checking for trash near exhaust manifolds, belts and bearings at least every couple of hours. He says producers should carry two fire extinguishers, one in the cab and one at ground level; and he also recommends having an extra tractor attached to a disk at the edge of the field being harvested in case it is needed to build a firebreak.
