County Continues to Work on 2013-14 Budget

MADISON - The budget for Madison County will be going up this year – but no one is yet sure exactly what that will mean for property taxes. The budget committee, comprised of County Clerk Nancy Scheer and County Road Superintendent Dick Johnson, presented more information to the Board of Commissioners this morning. Most budget requests are finalized, but the county’s valuation for the coming year won’t be established until later this month. Board Chairman Lee Klein says other elected officials have helped hold the line on budget increases.Klein says one of the larger increases is a 12-percent increase in the cost of health insurance for county employees. The board will review the budget again at its next meeting on August 27th. At that time, property valuations should be complete and the board will have a better idea of what kind of levy will be needed to support the budget.
