Conditional Use Permit Affirmed For Alter Trading Corporation

The Norfolk City Council has affirmed a Conditional Use Permit for an expansion at Alter Trading Corporation, located at 500 Washington Avenue. The 7-to-nothing vote was taken last night after a public hearing on an appeal of the Planning Commission's recommendation. Alter plans to install a large metal shredder at its site to increase its capacity to process scrap metal for Nucor and other clients. One of the conditions in the permit deals with hours of operation, allowing the shredder to operate outside of regular business hours if needed. Jay Rabinowitz , chief operation officer for Alter, explained that his company really doesn't plan to run the extended hours, but their power can be interrupted by NPPD when demand is high.
