Benedictine Sisters award nursing scholarships to Northeast Nebraska single moms
NORFOLK - When the Missionary Benedictine Sisters divested their interests in Faith Regional Health Services in 2008, some of the money received was used to endow nursing scholarships. This year, two single mothers from Northeast Nebraska, Sofia Artigas of Norfolk and Lindsey Sievers of Randolph are sharing $2,700 and will attend Northeast Community College beginning this fall. Benedictine sister and Immaculata Convent Priories Sister Pia Portmann says the awarding of the scholarships goes hand-in-hand with the sisters’ mission of helping the poor and marginalized. The sisters have also helped to fund nursing scholarships for their members serving in India, Kenya and Uganda. The Benedictine Sisters came to Northeast Nebraska from Germany 90 years ago.
