Amendment Would Expand Impeachable Offenses

LINCOLN - One of the four amendments Nebraska voters will be asked to approve tomorrow would expand the definition of an impeachable offense. Senator Bill Avery of Lincoln supports including crimes committed in pursuit of office as impeachable offenses. He says the courts have ruled those acts would have to be significant. Current law allows the legislature to impeach an officeholder only if he commits an offense while in office. Offenses committed in pursuit of office are off limits. Other constitutional amendments on tomorrow's ballot would increase salaries for state lawmakers, increase the amount of time a state senator may serve before being "term limited" out of office, and enshrine the right to hunt and fish in the state constitution.
