5th District Judge to Retire
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A district judge for eastern Nebraska has announced his plan to retire next month. Judge Michael Owens for the 5th Judicial District will retire effective Jan. 31. The 5th District covers Boone, Butler, Colfax, Hamilton, Merrick, Nance, Platte, Polk, Saunders, Seward and York counties. Owens has served on the bench since being appointed in 1996. The first step in replacing Owens will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether his retirement creates a judicial vacancy. That determination will be based on judicial workload statistics.
